Alaska, sub-zero temperatures, over 1,150 miles in anywhere from 10 to 17 days. Each team is composed of one musher and 12 to 16 dogs, braving the elements on an Anchorage-to-Nome trek straight out of a Jack London story. Originally a method of delivering mail and supplies to far-flung Alaskan towns, the Iditarod is now one of the world's most unique races.

Except, of course, for the Idiotarod, a knockoff competition run in several American cities, where five hipster morons tie themselves to a shopping cart. Witness the idiocy:
