10 Ten Endurance Competitions
As the Dakar Auto Rally held this year for the first time outside of Africa kicks off, TIME looks at other notable tests of human stamina.
Why trek for hundreds of miles across one desert when you can do so across four? The Four Deserts ultramarathon (also known as the RacingThePlanet competition), involves a six-day, 150-mile walk across each of the following: the Gobi, the Sahara, and the Atacama in Chile. Only by completing those three can participants take part in the final stage, a walk across Antarctica known as the Last Desert competition.
And yes, Antarctica, with negligible annual rainfall, is considered a desert.
This year's schedule is as follows:
Atacama Crossing, March 29
Gobi March, June 14
Sahara Race, Oct. 25
The Last Desert, Nov. 29
