Top 10 Motown Performances
Fifty years after the founding of the iconic record label, TIME takes a look at some of the best Motown performances to be found
The Jackson 5 joined Motown in 1969 and they almost immediately had their first hit in this song, a funk-pop confection propelled by the voice of young Michael Jackson (the following year they would top the charts with three more songs, "ABC," "The Love You Save," and "I'll Be There"). The group was short-lived, ditching Motown in the mid-70s, but this 1971 ABC TV special, Goin' Back to Indiana, showed the quintet at their height. Yes, they're wearing ridiculous duds here, but listen to little Mikey's voice. Also, in case you missed it, "Scoop Newsworthy" there at the beginning is played by Bill Cosby.
