Kids with autism require as much routine and structure as possible. By definition, vacations are a break from routine activities. This explains why, as a widowed mom with two kids — the older being my son Nate, 15, who has autism — I've avoided family vacations. But wondering "What if?," I contacted a variety of experts and, with the help of Autism Speaks, solicited ideas from other parents of children with autism — there's quite a network. A flood of e-mails later, I've compiled this list of tips for parents who might be ready to hit the beach and test the waters during Autism Awareness Month.
