'Laodicean' and Other Spelling Bee Winning Words
Are you smarter than a fifth grader? 13-year-old Kavya Shivashankar won the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, correctly spelling laodicean. Can you spell these winning words from previous years?
Definition: a hypothetical parent language
Winner: 13-year-old Kerry Close of Asbury Park, N.J., who beat 274 other kids, including Akshay Buddiga who fainted onstage while spelling alopecoid (foxlike) before getting right back up to finish the word. Buddiga was the 2004 runner-up. His brother Pratyush won the competition in 2002.
