Kabul, Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, bunkers tend to be places to hide rather than mere hazards to negotiate on a golf course. But not at the Kabul Golf Club, a nine-hole course of rocky fairways and oil-slicked greens. If you ever end up playing it, look out for goats on the fairway, strands of barbed wire by the greens and a former Taliban training camp nestled behind the final hole. The mines have thankfully been cleared and the course deemed safe, but in a country ravaged by crime, conflict and poverty, the authorities may have bigger issues to deal with than promoting the game of golf.
