Burma's Parliamentary Election, 1990
Vacant (incumbent) vs. Aung San Suu Kyi
In the wake of nearly thirty years of military dictatorship, Burma — also known as Myanmar — held general elections on May 27, 1990. Despite the military junta placing the National League for Democracy's candidate, Aung San Suu Kyi, under house arrest in 1989, the party still won by a landslide with 392 of the 492 seats. The military annulled the results, and the party was never allowed to govern. Suu Kyi is still detained, and the junta continues to extend her imprisonment. Since the elections the country has continued to be run by the military regime known as the State Peace and Development Council.
