Henry's fear of disease — mostly the plague — was so great that he periodically bolted in order to avoid sickness. During the fall of 1517 and the summer of 1528 Henry — fearful of catching the plague — spent weeks in isolation. When the plague was at its peak, court business stopped entirely; it was only in rare years that the disease did not affect his plans at all.
