Top 10 Tour de France Moments
The Tour de France, which kicked off July 4, is a three-week, 2,000-mile test of human endurance. TIME takes a look back at some of the race's greatest moments
Truth be told, this list could easily have been made up of Lance Armstrong moments alone. Winning the Tour 10 years ago, after learning he had testicular cancer and was given just a 50-50 chance of survival? Forget cycling that goes down as one of the all-time great sporting achievements. But as a distillation of Armstrong's unique, unfathomable magic, we turn to the Tour of 2001 and the legendary Galibier climb on the stage to Alpe d'Huez. Leading the pack, Armstrong seemed to flag on the ascent. But just as his rivals were scenting blood, he launched himself away from them on the final climb to take the stage. Experts claimed that the Tour itself was won there and then, but the real icing was yet to come: just as Armstrong kicked into high gear, he turned back to German racer Jan Ullrich and the rest of the pack and simply stared them down. The move, which proved yet again who was boss of the Tour de France, would forever be known as "the look."
