We scoured the country to find places, things and activities that speak to the real America. Some of them are fairly obscure; some of them are not. But they're all fun and diverse, and reveal the genuine U.S.

Pity those areas that don't have seasons (we're looking at you, L.A.). For so many people, one of the greatest pleasures of summer giving way to fall is the changing of the leaves. And what better place to experience those golden yellows and burnt oranges than on New Hampshire's Kancamagus Highway. The 35-mile stretch of road is one of the country's best places to take in October's foliage, and the road winds past mountains, covered bridges, waterfalls and other sites that are, thankfully, not Wal-Marts.
