6. (Tie) "Stillness Is the Move" by Dirty Projectors and also Solange

Brooklyn experimentalists Dirty Projectors wrote and recorded this rhythm-shifting, pitch-tossing oddity for their excellent 2009 album Bitte Orca. Solange — little sister of Beyoncé — heard it, pried away some of the abstract kudzu, added a sample of "Bumpy's Lament" by Soul Mann & the Brothers, and presto! A song that's both an indie hit and the best R&B jam of the year.
