Awkward: The 10 Most Cringe-Worthy Press Conferences
After more than a week of denying he sent lewd photos from his Twitter feed, Rep. Anthony Weiner came clean in a hasty free for all press conference. TIME takes a look at other uncomfortable press conferences that have put us ill at ease
The Weinergate Roast
He did everything he could to avoid telling the truth. First he called it a prank meant to make fun of his name: "When you're named Weiner, that happens a lot." Then he claimed he couldn't tell "with certitude" if the lewd photos sent from his Twitter account were of his body. So when Representative Anthony Weiner called a press conference June 6 to clear up the issue, it was bound to be awkward. Those who tuned in got their money's worth when conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, Weiner's nemesis who published some of the photos, took to the lectern unannounced to claim vindication. And when Weiner arrived, things got even stranger. As Weiner finally admitted he did in fact send the racy photos and attempted to apologize to his wife, his constituents and the women who received the pics, a reporter kept yelling from the back of the room, "Were you fully erect in the photo?" Perhaps it goes to show, you can tell the truth, but you can never come clean.
