America's top general for the war in Afghanistan, McChrystal won a protracted battle inside the Obama Administration for a massive 30,000 troop surge as part of a classic counterinsurgency campaign against the Taliban and their al-Qaeda allies. McChrystal's initial assault on Taliban strongholds in Marjah presaged a larger attack on the former headquarters of the insurgency in Kandahar.
