If he weren't so unfailingly modest, Singh could claim double bragging rights for India's emergence as one of the world's leading nations: as its Finance Minister in the 1990s, he instituted the reforms that fired up the Indian economic engine; and as Prime Minister for the past six years, he has provided the political stability that allowed it to accelerate. Small wonder that voters returned his Congress Party to power last year with a stronger mandate.
