Five British Indie Bands to Watch

Britain has an indie scene all its own, and its hottest artists are making their way to the U.S. and beyond. Here are five new acts to watch, including the xx, winners of the 2010 Mercury Prize

Florence and the Machine

Florence and the Machine

London-based Florence and the Machine might be the best-known U.K. indie-rock group in the U.S. The band's debut album, Lungs, was a No. 1 hit in the U.K. and stayed on the charts for more than a year after its release; in the U.S., it reached No. 130 on the Billboard 200. The band's songs have appeared on Gossip Girl and in the sound track to last summer's Megan Fox vehicle Jennifer's Body as well as The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and, more recently, Eat Pray Love. Redhaired lead singer Florence Welsh, who is backed by an eclectic and ever shifting ensemble, including guitars, drums, keyboards and harp, is known for her ferocious stage shows.

Sounds like: Patti Smith, Paramore

Recommended song: "Dog Days Are Over"
