Last weekend saw the convening of the 2010 European Rubik's Cube Championship in Budapest, with skilled competitors solving the puzzle in a matter of seconds. TIME takes a look at some of the world's geekiest contests
Speedcubing
How fast can you solve a Rubik's Cube? If it takes you more than 30 seconds, you'd be out of luck at any international speedcubing competition, where nimble-fingered athletes race to solve the famous puzzle. Last weekend saw the 2010 European Rubik's Cube Championship, but none of the competitors could match Erik Akkersdijk. According to the World Cube Association, the Dutchman has the fastest official time ever recorded on a 3-by-3-by-3 cube: 7.08 sec., set at the 2008 Czech Open.
