Tim Leatherman's "Mr. Crunch" prototype multitool took nearly eight years to perfect. While traveling abroad with his wife in 1975, Leatherman set about creating a "Boy Scout knife with pliers." The Pocket Survival Tool was released in 1983 and quickly rivaled the Swiss Army knife as the go-to emergency tool of choice.
