10. Justified, "Fire in the Hole" (Pilot)
Though this Kentucky-lawman series took half a season or so to find its footing as a serial, the impeccable pilot immediately established Justified's characters' verve and voice. (The latter being essential in a series based on the writing of Elmore Leonard.) As U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, Timothy Olyphant inhabited an anachronism a Stetson-wearing, ice-cool, quick-drawing lawman yet made him feel naturally at home in the 21st century Appalachia of skinheads and crystal meth.
