Top 10 Unconventional Leading Men
As Steve Buscemi reprises his leading role in Season 2 of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," TIME takes a look at other unconventional leading men throughout the years
About as unlikely a leading man as there is, Ron Perlman found his acting niche playing roles that required half-ton trucks of makeup. After years spent playing everything from a Neanderthal to a hunchback to a lionized hybrid Minotaur, the New York Cityborn actor finally landed a leading role as the unconventional comic hero Hellboy. For the role, Perlman undergoes a transformation, accentuating his appearance with prosthesis, Marilyn Monroered face paint and horned oblong implants on either side of his wide forehead. Though the role spun into a full-fledged trilogy, it's Perlman's lead role on the FX series Sons of Anarchy that truly proves his leading talent. As the show's antihero, Clay Morrow, president of the titular motorcycle club, Perlman again proves that sometimes the scarier the look, the better the star.
