The Top 10 Everything of 2011
In 54 wide-ranging lists, TIME surveys the highs and lows, the good and the bad, of the past 12 months
1. Mourir Auprès de Toi (To Die by Your Side)
"I don't want to die." "It's okay. It's not so bad." When the Shakespeare and Co. bookstore in Paris closes down for the night, the characters on the books covers get frisky and flirt with the existential. Director Spike Jonze teamed up with designer Olympia le Tan to create this exquisite stop-motion film with embroidery and felt. The animation is lush (Mina Harker from Dracula has incredibly bouncy hair) and the story is romantic until the rollicking end credits, which will make you blush in a way you never thought needlework could.
Caveat: Even though the characters are made of felt, this one is decidedly NSFW.
