Major Richard D. Winters
Richard D. Winters started in Easy Company as a 2nd Lieutenant in charge of the 1st Platoon, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for action on D-Day and rose to Major as the war progressed. Of Carentan, his commanding officer said, "His personal bravery and battle knowledge held a crucial position when the going was really rough". A self-less man, many who served under Winters have said that he was the most brave and courageous soldier they ever knew. As Winters commented at the premier, "Pass these lesson that we learned along. They were hard lessons to learn."
