So you've finally secured a date and you stopped hearing Al Michaels' voice in your head. ("Do you believe in miracles? Yes!") But don't wear out that Kool & the Gang record yet. You won't be celebrating good times without the proper planning.

Most people agree that movies don't make a good first date. Conversation is nil, someone you barely know is pawing into your popcorn, and there's always the threat of a Carrot Top cameo.

Self-proclaimed singles expert Don Diebel, who looks a lot like Clayton Endicott III from TV's "Benson," recommends and comments on 17 places to go, including everything from the predictable (museums, romantic restaurants) to the creative (sailing, skating) to the eyebrow-raising (tattooing). AskMen.com's 15 first date ideas include something for every budget, from shooting pool to limo cruising. About.com also compiled a collection of cheap dates and romantic ideas from its users. The commonality among all of the suggestions is interaction and happiness. Ever had a bad time at the miniature golf course? Or the arcade? It's almost impossible. Look what it did for the Karate Kid.

Once you've got your spot picked out, you have to dress the part. Obviously, mountain climbing and fine dining require different dress codes, but we'll try to help out as much as possible here. InStyle.com's Trend Alert keeps women ahead of the curve on products, hairstyles and fashion. AskMen.com is nice enough to supply some first-date fashion advice after suggesting venues above.

Sometimes it's a good idea to not have too much planned. In case things don't work out well, the theory goes, it'll be easier to bail if you haven't made dinner reservations. But you've got to think positively, and at least be familiar with some good restaurants in each part of town. Citysearch has every area of the country covered, with reviews and location of restaurants sorted by cuisine, price and ambience.
