REAR-PROJECTION CRT
Size Range: 42 in. to 73 in.
Price Range: $1,600 to $8,000

CRT rear-projection TVs have been around a while. Instead of having a single CRT pointed right at you, they use three — a red, a green and a blue — which are aimed together at a focusing lens which bounces the picture off of a mirror and at your head. Like direct-view CRTs, these sets weigh a lot. What's more, the three tubes sometimes need periodic alignment, or the red, green and blue will end up off kilter. Compared to other rear-projection sets, they have greater contrast and richer color in low lighting (although the advantage is lost in a brightly lit room).
