DLP on rare occasions called by its full Texas Instruments-given name, Digital Light Processing is the third of the slim rear-projection TVs. Using a color wheel, red, green and blue lights shine in rapid succession over a single mirror-covered chip, whose image is then focused by a projection lens. Known for having the best contrast of the rear-projection TVs, DLPs are nevertheless as bright as the competition, though lower in resolution. Early models suffered from something called the "rainbow effect," which meant that on occasion, viewers would see distinct red, green and blue elements. But with improvements to the color wheel, this problem is most likely fading away.
