Magellan RoadMate 700
Portable GPS in-car navigation system

SHOULD I SOUP UP MY SYSTEM?
For most of their history, cars came with cheap stereos that sounded bad but were easy to replace with something better. That changed during the past decade, when car makers began factory installing better sound systems that were good enough and difficult to replace. Now, thanks to the coming of MP3, satellite radio, GPS navigation systems and DVDs, many people are beginning to upgrade their systems. Should you be one of them?

On the low end, a quick and relatively cheap way to improve your car's sound quality is to simply replace your factory speakers. Higher up, you may want to add video screens, DVD players or GPS navigation. Portable systems like the Magellan RoadMate 700 can easily go from car to car, but in-car multimedia systems from Pioneer and Alpine, among others, include the option of elaborate voice-activated GPS navigation systems.

On the next few pages we'll discuss what some good upgrade options are, and how to go about them. Happy riding.
