WHAT ABOUT THE KIDS?
If a priority is calming down the little ones in the back, a DVD player with drop-down LCD is probably the ticket. Priced between $600 and $1,100, with an installation of $100 to $200, these self-contained units are all the rage.
Sony's MV-9000DSR in-car DVD Dream system ($1,100) has a 9-in. LCD screen with speakers on the side. It also comes with two pairs of wireless headphones, so that cartoon voices emanating from the back seat don't crush your concentration. The best part is that you only mount a docking station to the ceiling of your car; the player itself unsnaps to become a portable battery-powered unit you can take with you for what Sony calls an "out-of-vehicle experience."
Though the drop-down all-in-one is certainly the easiest way to put DVD in the back seat, it's not the only way. You can buy a head unit with an integrated DVD player, and have an installer run the video to two 7-in. LCD screens buried in the back of each front-seat headrest. Unless you opt for an a la carte wireless headphone system, you would hear the DVD's audio through the car's sound system. Since it's the classier no-muss method, headrests built to fit every new make and model are more readily available, but the whole thing can cost a lot more, with a custom-designed scenario starting at around $1,500.
