TIME invited six individuals of diverse backgrounds and accomplishments to a February 1, 1998 symposium at Washington's Kennedy Center to debate who should be among the 20th century's most influential people. Moderated by PBS anchor Charlie Rose, the panel focused initially on leaders and revolutionaries, the subject of the first TIME 100 issue, before turning to a broad discussion of the century and its standouts -- from artists and explorers to scientists and thinkers.
