Pietro Annigoni (1910-1988)
Pietro Annigoni's work ranges from portraits of British royalty, the Shah of
Iran and American presidents, to a self-portrait which initially brought
world attention to the fast-living Italian painter. Though he was criticized
by some as a mimic for adopting a wide range of styles in his portraits and
drawings, Annigoni's work has been featured in Museums from Florence to
Brooklyn. TIME first called on Annigoni to produce the 1961 Man of the Year
cover of President John Kennedy. His sober, almost grim portrait of the young
President was criticized by many readers who saw Kennedy as cheerful and
charismatic, but the artist stood by his vision, saying simply: "I've seen the
man at work."
