Paleontologists work in Egypt’s Valley of the Whales, a desert area more than 100 miles southwest of Cairo where around 400 fossilized whale skeletons have been found, including this, the 40 million year-old, 50-foot long remains of the prehistoric whale Basilosaurus Isis. Basilosaurus lived in shallow, warm seas that used to cover parts of Africa and Europe, and, with its tiny legs, represents a transitional period in whale development from land- to sea-going mammal
