FUN HOME by Alison Bechdel
The unlikeliest literary success story of 2006 is this stunning memoir about a girl growing up in small-town Pennsylvania with her cryptic, perfectionist father and slowly realizing that a) she's a lesbian and b) he's a closeted gay man. Oh, and it's a comic book Bechdel's breathtakingly, pitilessly smart commentary duets with deliriously eloquent line drawings, as well as letters and maps and literary quotations. Forget genre, forget sexual preference: this is a masterpiece about two people who live in the same house but different worlds, and the mysterious blood debts they owe each other.
