WHAT IS THE WHAT by Dave Eggers
When Valentino Achak Deng was a young boy, soldiers burned his village. He became one of Sudan's Lost Boys parentless, he walked hundreds of miles in search of safety, then spent years in one refugee camp after another. When he finally came to America as a young man, his problems started all over again. Don't read this novel which is closely based on one Lost Boy's life out of any sense of pity or obligation. Read it because it's a great document of hope, and despair, and the will to keep walking one step further.
