VOLVER
Two Madrid sisters return to their decrepit hometown (which has the highest rate of insanity in the region) to track down the rumor that the ghost of their dead mother is on the loose. After the all-guy Bad Education, director Pedro Almodovar offers a hymn to sisterhood also motherhood, aunthood and, in its celebration of the villages of our youth, 'hood-hood. Earth mama Penelope Cruz leads a fabulous cast that includes Carmen Maura, Almodovar's first muse, working with him after a break of 17 years. Volver may not reach the masterpiece level of Pedro's All About My Mother and Talk to Her, but it's a satisfying, often jolting comedy-drama from the most generous and humane movie entertainer of our time.
