SUPERMAN RETURNS AND V FOR VENDETTA
I'd be surprised if either of these comic-book-based movies makes many 10 Best lists. But I liked them for the brio with which they worked out their audacious central metaphors. Director Bryan Singer's Man of Steel is a god come to earth and ready to give his life to redeem it in other words, Jesus Christ Superman. V, the twisted idealist who thinks that he can do civic and political good by blowing up a major city's biggest landmark, is essentially Osama bin Laden with a Happy mask and a cute girlfriend (Natalie Portman). The two figures make fascinating bookends for the anxieties of 2006; and I think somebody should get them together. After all, if Freddy could face off against Jason, why couldn't Supe try teaching liberal humanism to the man with no face?
