WARNER BROS.
THE DEPARTED
The Boston mob places an informant in the special police unit investigating their activities. The cops reciprocate by introducing a similar figure among the criminals. And director Martin Scorsese returns to his home ground to make a great film—brutal, bloody, sometimes wildly funny (largely thanks to Jack Nicholson who gives a towering performance as the lead gangster). This is not to imply that Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon are less than superb as the conflicted undercover operatives. The film is also rich in great supporting performances (special mention must be made of Alec Baldwin). In the end, the film is an anguished portrayal of trust, loyalty and the way small, human flaws combined with heavy criminal pressures lead, finally, to devastating consequences.
