Beijing: Finding the Perfect Souvenir
Shard Boxes
Without doubt, you'll find the best gifts in the Shard Box Shop. Tens of thousands of pieces of ancient pottery were destroyed during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution when the ownership of such "bourgeois" items could mean a death sentence. The owners of this shop literally picked up the pieces after the madness had died down and crafted boxes of all sizes and shapes out of the remaining shards. The shop also makes charming jewelry, mostly using semiprecious stones and the like.
