Mideast agony: Efforts by the U.S. to broker a new peace accord collapsed in the face of a bloody series of suicide bombings in Israeli cities. The terrorists were from Hamas, radical Palestinian opponents of the peace process, and their objective was to avenge one of their leaders slain by Israel and also to sabotage renewed peace efforts —  on the latter count, their mission appears to have succeeded.
