Tragedy at sea: Nine Japanese students drowned when their training vessel, the Ehime Maru, was struck by the U.S.S. Greeneville. The incident raised tensions between the two countries when it was learned that the American submarine had been conducting a mock emergency surfacing to impress civilian guests. The Greeneville's captain, Commander Scott Waddle, accepted responsibility.
