Return of the warrior: With the peace process in tatters and the flames of intifada raging, Israeli voters handed Ariel Sharon an unlikely landslide victory over Ehud Barak. Sharon had been a fierce critic of the peace process, and Barak's campaign warned that the often-controversial hawk would drag Israel back into war. But the climate of fear and insecurity made the old war horse the voter's choice.
