Menacing meats: Hard on the heels of the Mad Cows disease scare, farmers in Britain and parts of Western Europe were devastated by an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. The outbreak forced authorities to destroy tens of thousands of cows, sheep and pigs, and brought the meat industry to a standstill. The estimated cost to farmers, and to Britain's tourism industry, ran into the billions.
