Drug war tragedy: The U.S. war on drugs in Latin America was spotlighted by Peru's air force shooting down a plane carrying American missionaries, mistaking it for a drug flight. A U.S. surveillance plane sent out to look for drug traffickers had first alerted Peru to presence of the missionaries' plane, although the U.S. officials had urged the Peruvian pilot to take further steps to identify the plane before opening fire. |
