After a four-year battle with cancer, George Harrison surrendered to a death he did not fear. Surrounded by family and friends, the "quiet Beatle" died at a friend's home in Los Angeles on November 29th. Harrison's death sparked mourning reminiscent of a day 20 years ago when his former band-mate John Lennon was gunned down in New York City.  Harrison, who loathed celebrity but loved music, was a gifted guitarist; his experimentation with the 12-string and the sitar was evident not only in the Beatles' later music, but in Harrison's solo work and collaborations. Mentor Ravi Shankar recalled his pupil's life with great affection. "George was a brave and beautiful soul, full of love, childlike humor and a deep spirituality."
