Striking back: After the Taliban failed to heed U.S. warnings to hand over Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda network, the U.S. launched its first air raids on October 7. The air campaign, directed by U.S. special forces on the ground, lent critical support to Northern Alliance and other anti-Taliban forces in Afghanistan, and resulted into the movement's elimination within two months.
