The victors: Before September 11, Afghanistan's Northern Alliance was fighting for its very survival along the country's northern borders. But they were the natural ally for a U.S. military in need of an infantry to complement its air power. Supplied and guided by coalition forces, they took advantage of U.S. bombing to recapture more than half of the country from the Taliban.
