[00:14] John Ternus is leading Apple into its next era. [00:18] In September, Ternus took over as CEO as [00:21] Tim Cook stepped down after 15 years in the role. [00:25] Hello and welcome to Apple Park. I am. [00:28] He's now overseeing the launch of the iPhone duo, [00:31] Apple's first ever foldable phone. [00:33] The most dramatic design change to [00:36] the iPhone since its debut in 2007. [00:40] And Apple is still finding its footing in the AI space, [00:43] where the company's efforts [00:44] have largely been overshadowed [00:46] by its rivals race toward superintelligence. [00:49] Following this year's Apple keynote event, [00:52] I spoke with John Ternus at [00:54] the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California. [00:57] You first joined Apple [00:59] 25 years ago as a member of the product design team. [01:03] You've been working with Tim for [01:05] the last several months, maybe more. [01:06] For all we know, preparing for this transition. [01:10] He really passed the baton to you this morning. [01:13] What have you spent most of your time [01:15] talking about these last few months? [01:17] Uh, honestly, talking about the future, right? [01:21] I mean, that's that's kind of what we do here. [01:22] We're always I mean, even today, [01:23] today is an amazing moment. [01:25] We celebrate tomorrow. [01:26] It's past and we're on to the next thing. [01:28] And, uh, and yeah, [01:30] just a lot of really wonderful conversations [01:32] with Tim about, [01:33] you know, where do we go from here [01:35] and what new opportunities do we have? [01:37] And it's been great. [01:38] How involved with design are you still? [01:42] Well, you know, it's funny because as a product designer, [01:45] that's a mechanical engineer by background. [01:47] And the, the team that the product designers [01:49] work most closely with are the industrial designers. [01:52] So I've been working hand in hand with [01:54] industrial designers at Apple since, since I started. [01:57] And it's, it's an amazing relationship. [01:59] I think what's so special about this place [02:00] is design is at the center of it. [02:02] Like design means everything to us. [02:04] And what's incredible is our designers, [02:07] both on the software side and the hardware side, [02:09] they really understand the engineering, [02:11] and the engineers have [02:13] a very deep appreciation for design. [02:15] And so it's a really powerful collaboration. [02:18] It's not a designer sketches something [02:20] up and then throws it over [02:21] the wall and says, go make that. [02:22] It's from the very beginning. [02:24] The teams are collaborating and, [02:26] and it's just a wonderful thing to be a part of. [02:28] iPhone duo brings an entirely new design [02:31] while preserving everything you [02:33] love and expect from iPhone. [02:35] When closed, the duo is about the size of a passport, [02:40] and when opened, it looks like a small tablet. [02:43] The surface is made from [02:44] a durable custom polymer and has a display engine [02:48] that enables a seamless transition [02:50] between its inner and outer screens. [02:53] Apple hopes that users will find the phone as integral to [02:56] their routines as they do other beloved Apple products. [03:00] How do you know when a design choice is [03:03] genuinely contributing to the experience, [03:06] rather than simply calling attention to itself? [03:09] That's a good question. I think that comes from, again, [03:13] the the collaboration that we have, [03:15] the cross-functional because, because [03:17] everybody's kind of looking to [03:18] solve these problems together. [03:19] And first and foremost, we're focused on what is [03:22] going to make this product better for [03:23] the user and that guides it. [03:25] And so as long as you're thinking that way, [03:27] then something that's frivolous or [03:28] distracting isn't going to [03:30] make things better for the user. [03:31] And so we're not going to do that. [03:32] So we focus on on usefulness and utility and capability, [03:36] but design helps make the experience better. [03:40] And sometimes you just want a little whimsy. [03:42] Like if you saw with the iPhone duo, when you open it up, [03:44] there's this beautiful animation [03:46] as you open to the inner screen. [03:48] That's not a functional thing, [03:49] but it's something that makes [03:50] you feel good every time you see it. [03:52] Actually, I think one of my favorite things [03:53] about it was the kids queue, [03:55] and I don't even have kids. [03:56] I think it actually might work on my dog too. [03:58] When I want him to look at it. [04:00] Would I bet it would. Yeah. So you have to let us know. [04:02] Yeah. If you can tell [04:03] our listeners and our audience what kids queue is. [04:06] Yeah. Well, so it's really fun. [04:07] So with the foldable, you're opening up now, of course, [04:09] you have a display on both sides and [04:10] you have cameras on both sides. [04:11] And so one of the things that we can do is we have, [04:14] um, peanuts characters like [04:16] Snoopy on the outside display. [04:18] So it'll kind of capture [04:20] your child's attention while you're taking [04:21] a picture and get them to look at the camera. [04:23] And this is just one of these things where when [04:24] we started this product, [04:26] we were building something very [04:27] different than what iPhones had been. [04:28] And it was an opportunity to honestly get clever and [04:31] have fun and come up with new and interesting things. [04:34] And kids is a great example of that. [04:36] You have a reputation at Apple for being remarkably calm, [04:41] but outside of work, you race cars. [04:44] When did your fascination with going fast begin? [04:48] Oh, you know, I have [04:50] an older brother who was very much into cars. [04:53] Uh, and when he was in college, [04:55] he got a sports car, Datsun 240 Z. [04:57] Really cool car. And I was just in love with it. [05:00] And so he would ride, you know, [05:02] I'd get to ride around with him in it and everything. [05:04] And then, uh, when, [05:05] when I got out of college [05:06] and he was already out of college, [05:08] we started doing some motorsports stuff together, [05:11] uh, and just never, [05:13] never got tired of it and love it. [05:15] Despite being one of the biggest names in tech, [05:18] Apple has taken a notably different approach [05:21] in the AI race. [05:22] Rather than trying to keep pace with the frontier models [05:25] of anthropic, OpenAI and Google, [05:28] Apple has focused more on intentionally integrating [05:32] AI into the products consumers already know and love. [05:36] Because there's no product in [05:37] the world better designed to [05:39] be your intelligent personal hub than iPhone. [05:41] Apple announced Siri AI, [05:43] which is powered by an Apple AI model [05:46] that leverages Google's Gemini technology. [05:49] Mom sent you an email with recipes for [05:51] grandma's peach pie and grandma's lemon meringue pie. [05:54] How do you think about Apple's role in [05:55] shaping what comes next in AI? [05:57] Yeah. Look, I think, [05:59] um, this is the, I'm convinced, [06:02] the most exciting time in [06:03] my career to be building product [06:06] because AI has so much potential to [06:08] kind of allow us to change products, [06:10] make new products, all of that. [06:12] Our focus is what it always is. [06:14] We focus not on technology, but on product. [06:17] And how do we leverage technology to build products and [06:20] features and experiences that [06:22] really matter to people that people love. [06:24] And if we're doing that right, [06:26] you don't even really know. [06:27] No one has to know that it was AI that had it happen. [06:29] They just want to know that, wow, [06:30] I was able to do that thing that I couldn't do before. [06:32] And it was fun and it was [06:34] easy and we could make it happen. [06:35] So that's our focus and we are really keen to, [06:39] to enable sort of the personal side of it, [06:42] which we talked about today. [06:44] Um, there's so much of [06:45] your personal life is on your phone, right? [06:47] Your phone is such a key part of your life. [06:50] Uh, and the beauty of our system [06:53] is that privacy is it's just all built in. [06:56] And so that using Siri AI, [06:59] you can tap into that personal contact, [07:01] but nobody else can see it. [07:02] Apple can't even see it. We don't [07:03] want to see it and we can't see it. [07:04] It is your information. [07:06] And I think that is going to be [07:07] our contribution in this space is how do we build [07:10] deeply personal experiences leveraging [07:12] AI that help us all be more creative, [07:15] be more productive, do whatever it is that we want to do. [07:19] Is there anything about AI that scares you? [07:22] I mean, it's a space that's moving fast. [07:24] And so when things are moving fast, like, [07:27] you know, it's sometimes hard to to predict the outcomes. [07:31] I feel really good about what [07:33] we're focusing on because again, [07:34] we're keeping the user at the center of it, [07:37] and it's all in service of [07:39] building a better capability and experience for the user. [07:42] You announced in June that you're working [07:45] with the American Academy of Pediatrics, [07:47] and will be rolling out a new set of tools to [07:50] help parents easily manage screen time. [07:53] Why now, and how do you see Apple playing a role [07:57] as parents and governments [07:59] weigh how technology impacts our children? [08:02] Yeah, we I mean, we've had [08:03] screen time for a long time, right? [08:05] And, um, you know, [08:07] I can say personally, as a parent, [08:08] I've worked with it in the past and it was, [08:10] it was good, but it was not great. [08:12] And I think, you know, this year, [08:15] I think we did something really great with our, [08:17] with our new child safety work. [08:19] And it's a really important time. [08:20] It's, it can be challenging to [08:22] be a parent and figure out like, [08:24] how do I manage what my kids are seeing, [08:27] how often they're seeing it, [08:28] who they're talking to? [08:30] And so we wanted to build tools that [08:31] make that really easy for parents. [08:33] And I think we've, [08:35] I think we've done just that. [08:36] Apple is now one of [08:38] the largest and most successful companies in history. [08:42] What do you want to preserve as CEO about the way Apple [08:47] makes design decisions as [08:48] the company enters this next chapter? [08:51] Yeah. Well, look, I think [08:52] the the opportunities and [08:54] the products, that stuff will change. [08:56] It'll evolve as it does as new technologies come. [08:59] But the way we work. [09:00] Uh, I don't want that to change. [09:02] I think, you know, as we said before, [09:04] design has always been at the core of this company. [09:07] And, uh, and I think our respect for the user and [09:11] for building products that [09:12] are that are helpful and beneficial to people, [09:15] that is, that is job one.
