I'm genuinely honored to be here to recognize her the timers Award winner Jackie Patterson, because Jackie simple yet revolutionary approach to her nonprofit organization has focused on helping marginalized communities that have been hit disproportionately hard by climate change by taking on the systemic issues that have left them more exposed. It's an uncomfortable conversation and topic for a lot of people to think about because many of us may know what is happening with our Earth due to our choices, but we haven't had to face the dire consequences or witnessed the repercussions of those choices ourselves or how they impact our communities are families are children, but it doesn't mean it's not happening every day throughout this country throughout the world and where is big is not big or nonprofits largely take on single issues. Jackie's organization. The Chisholm Legacy project takes on an intersection approach. They understands that we cannot speak of the climate crisis without addressing poverty racial discrimination and gender inequality. All of which combined pose enormous challenges for at-risk communities. The Chisholm Legacy project connects black community is with the resources. They need to make change and actualize their vision for the future. They make sure that communities that have been historically marginalized invisible eyes and forgotten never fall through the cracks again that their children and their families have the basic human right to clean and safe water are food and energy just like all of us do I cannot stress enough how fortunate we all are to be here with Jackie today. This is the work that we're going to look back on in a hundred years and recognize how it actually moved the needle in our protection of the planet and our fellow brothers and sisters again who are alive today not just in the future is my honor to welcome a 2024 time woman of the year and Earth award honoree Jackie Patterson. I think we're supposed to say something. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. I was asked to say a few words. So I just wanted to thank so much to Time magazine for this duel award. I was walking into a conference space during the lunch hour when everyone had left for break and after I had traveled all morning I walked in and I saw the snack counter and I saw my favorite cheap drink, which was I made a beeline for the table only to be stopped by a woman who said to me in a tone that was Dripping with sensor. She was clearly convinced that this greedy add black woman was in the wrong place and she was determined to block me for my Cory, but I just clearly said great. I'm in the right place. I understood why she made such an assumption and then I called her enduring my remarks later on but not to be bested by the time when a lady thought that I was a security guard at the botanical gardens in Pittsburgh, even though I was wearing a cocktail dress like this one just because I was standing in the vicinity of the security stand and ironically they are all is hosting this event at the inaugural Gathering of the Sun during a queen in the Sustainable Building sector initiatives, which I have found it. And then there was another time and another time and someone to come when I can give you many examples that only have three minutes. So the good news is that we made some progress since then there are so few of us who are occupying space is at that time, but now we have much more people in the in the foreground. But I mean, I want to look up some of these luminaries who are who are occupying these faces. I also applauded the sisters who called out there on fossil fuel industry atrocities women from the Women of Nigeria to the Inuit sisters in Alaska who boarded his kayak putting their bodies on the line shouting show know as they block the ship ships from other oil companies carry their cargo, which it was actively harming people in Planet all praises to awesome sisters. Like Ray shuttle is Zane of Lake Charles, Louisiana, who's that the efforts to block the calcico past liquefied natural gas facilities sisters, like Destiny Watford of Curtis Bay in Baltimore who had 17 let the successful effort to block the building of one of the largest incinerators that would in the nation that would have been in her backyard Esther Calhoun in Seattle or it's dead who advanced the efforts around and blocking the the pollution from landfills in their backyard Monica Lewis, Patrick and Deborah Taylor. We the people of Detroit advancing Equitable policies around water FM access Rhys Meyers a retiree from the labor movement who meets food apartheid head-on and her community in Sacramento by planting and Sending dozens of gardens in the backyards of neighbors who wouldn't be able to do it for themselves. And so many more than I can name again in the three minutes. They are my inspiration. They're my hope and they are proof positive of the words.
